Hotel Tax in Rome: Visiting Rome becomes delightfully taxing!

Rome has recently announced a new tax for people who stay in Roman hotels. The funds are promised to be utilised in providing and improving services, security, infrastructure transport and other aspects helpful for visitors the Italy’s great capital.

Via Sacra in Rome - ruins are beautiful but let's hope the new hotel tax in Rome helps to ensure we don't create any new ones in the future! Photo by Carla Tavares.

For anyone who has ever traversed the tiny, rough-hewn (yet delightfully historic) stones of Roman piazzas like Campo di Fiori, this may come as good news!

Repairs may well put an end to the wonderful pass-time of intense people watching from a front-row spot in a Roman cafés to easily spot the gorgeous local women expertly strutting their way across the cobblestones in impossibly high heels and still managing to look graceful about it! But for those of us non-locals lucky to be in one of the most wonderful cities in the world, the tax may just bring about some welcomed and wonderful improvements to infrastructure, or help with maintaining and restoring the historic monuments we flock to see.

The tax will be applied to all people staying in Rome, from campers through to five-star stayers. The specific prices for the new Rome hotel tax are as follows:

  • Campsite: 1 euro per person per night for a maximum of 5 nights.
  • Agriturismo: 2 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days
  • B&B: 2 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days
  • Rented room: 2 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days
  • Holiday house/apartment: 2 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days
  • 1 to 3 star hotel: 2 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days
  • 4 to 5 star hotel: 3 euro per person per night for a maximum of 10 days

There are talks that Rome is just the first of many an Italian city to introduce the tax which has already been introduced into many cities around the world.

So for barely more than the cost of a coffee per day, we hope this tax is well-used to maintain the wonderful must-see monuments of Rome for many generations to come!
