March 8 marks the International Women’s Day – a date to mark on the calendar to demonstrate and declare love and respect for women.
In Italy, the ‘Festa delle Donne’ usually entails the giving of yellow mimosa – a yellow wattle-like plant given in bunches or made into corsages warn on lapels. Women in Italy may also be treated to chocolates, a get-out-of-cooking-and/or-dish-washing-duty night, or other treats designed to express love and respect and appreciation.
The date also offers a great occasion to have a women’s afternoon tea or girl’s night out, and presents a great excuse to tell the women in your life how much you appreciate them.
Like a Mother’s Day for all women, the day actually has more of a Socialist history which led to the day being in support of women’s rights officially sanctioned by the United Nations.
Over time however, International Women’s Day has evolved into varying means of celebration in countries around the world from public holidays for women to the giving of traditional gifts or flowers to express appreciation.
Whilst we should never need a select date of the year to tell people in our lives how much we love and respect them, we at Artviva would like to take the opportunity to extend warm wishes to the hundreds of women we work with whose intelligence, spirit, knowledge, support, and general fantastic-ness inspires us daily, to the thousands of women we meet each year whose passion, humor, personality and friendly nature make our work thoroughly enjoyable, to the millions of women we all encounter in our everyday lives – be it passing by on the street, seated next to on the bus, letting us pass ahead at the supermarket check-out when we only have a few items, or inspiring us with their wisdom and panache. We would like to send out these sentiments to our girlfriends who support us through the trials and the victories, to our women relatives who teach us how to do everything we know (and with style), to women everywhere – we extend our warm wishes, our arms, and our hearts? today, and every day.
