One benefit of the rolling Tuscan hillside is the spectacular views afforded from atop. And there is not better time to enjoy the sight of the most beautiful wine country sprawled out before you than at sunset*.
From Florence, the best views are from Piazzale Michelangelo. This great Piazza overlooks Florence, and the surrounding Tuscan countryside beyond. In the late afternoon, you get not only the splendor of Florence by day, but also nature’s most spectacular spectacular of the sun setting behind the distant hillside. The afternoon light shimmering on the water of Florence’s Arno River, the golden colours of Florence’s Ponte Vecchio (‘Old Bridge’) looking just that bit more magical, it is just unforgettable.
Rinascente department store in Florence’s Piazza della Republica has a roof-top coffee shop with great views over the city centre. The coffee is a little more expensive, but the views are well worth it!
Nearby Fiesole also gives great views of Florence, and is a lovely little hilltop town very easy to access from Florence’s historical city centre.
Further on, and you are can reach the Chianti zone, with picture-perfect views of Tuscany, the landscape braided with the carefully cared for vineyards draped elegantly down the smooth hillside, watched over by the olive groves perfectly measured out above or beside.
From Siena, there is the bell tower in Piazza del Campo that rewards your efforts of the stair climb with wonderful views of the surrounding landscape.
If you can make it up the entire tilted cobbled street of San Gimignano, up up up and past the wine museum, you get to a little lookout from where you can see all of this stunning Tuscany hilltop town’s medieval towers.
