Project Pyramid: the rolling (& pointy) hills of Tuscany

Pyramids in Tuscany, Italy?

It seems those rolling Tuscan hills aren’t always as undulating as once thought.

In the small town of Rosano Fiorentino near Pontassieve, an archaeological project is underway in Tuscany after the discovery of three rather pointy hilltops.

It is believed these may be three pyramids, built some 14 kilometres east of Florence. Visible up to one kilometre away, the pyramidal hills seem to be formed in alignment with the Orion constellation just like the famous pyramids of Giza.

These would not be the first pyramids in Italy, nor even in Tuscany – with another pyramid being located in Le Cascine park just on the edge of Florence city. This one however was built in 1796 by Giuseppe Manetti. It was originally built to store ice, making this 10 metre pyramid one of the most unique fridges around! Now it is used to store garden equipment.

Just nearby there is also the Fonte di Narciso, a pyramid-shaped fountain.

Located in the Jewish Cemetary off Viale Ariosto is the oldest pyramid in Florence. Dating back to 1777 is the Levi family funeral chapel, which remained in use until the late 1800s. Today it is empty save from some remaining wreaths.

There is also the Pyramid of Cestius in Rome and the Pyramid of Romulus near the Vatican, if you are interested in visiting the pyramids of Rome.
