Florence is so full of wonderful masterpieces by some of the greatest artists in history. The Uffizi Gallery houses what is arguably one of the finest collections of Renaissance art (and the Accademia is home to what many claim is the greatest artwork ever made – Michelangelo’s David).
But there are also some great artworks also around the streets, such as the amazing statues to see in the loggia of Piazza della Signoria in the heart of Florence’s historic city centre, and around the Orsanmichele church.
There are also some great statues to discover inside the Boboli Gardens, the splendid must-visit backyard of the Pitti Palace. The Boboli Garden is open from November through February, 8:15am to 4:30pm, and until 5:30pm throughout March, then from April through October, from 8.15am to 6:30pm. Tickets cost around 8 euro per person.
Moving forward somewhat in history, from the Renaissance to 1981-1984, we have a quite unique statue in Florence – Michelangelo Pistoletto’s Dietrofront. This amazing artwork stands just outside the Porta Romana (or, ‘Roman Gates’ – guess where they face out to!).
Said to represent a woman looking back on her own past, her memories are illustrated by the upside down figure connecting to the upright woman’s head.
However, great art does leave room for much interpretation.
What do you think the statue means?
